History of Wolseley motor car company

1895: 30 year old Herbert Austin employed as
a works manager at Wolseley Sheep Shearing
Company became very interested in automobile and
engines, that year during the winter, he built a
version of Leon Bollee design automobile he had
seen in Paris, to later find out another British
group had already bought the rights so he had to
come up with his own design

1897: The Wolseley Autocar No. 1 was revealed,
the second car he had designed, a three wheel
automobile, it was unsuccessful, though it was
advertised for sale, none were sold

1899: The third Wolseley car was introduced, a
four wheeled automobile called the Voiturette

1900:
Another four wheeled automobile was made
featuring a steering wheel rather than a
tiller

1901: Production began along with the company
changing hands, with the automobile division
being spun off as an independent concern,
managed by Austin, based in Adderley Park,
Birmingham

1905: Austin resigned to form
Austin Motor Company, Wolseley bought Siddeley
Autocar Company with the company founder, John
Davenport Siddeley in charge

1914: Officially the company became Wolseley
Motor Company, they also began operating in
Montreal and Toronto, Canada under Wolseley
Motors Limited. After World War one they would
become British and American Motors

1918: A joint venture with Ishikawajiama Ship
Building and Engineering in Tokyo, Japan began

1919: Wolseley took over Ward End, a Birmingham
munitions factory

1922: First Japanese built Wolseley car rolled
of the line

1926: October: Despite rising sales, finances
were strained and the company faced receivership
with debts of £2 million

1927: William Morris personally purchased Wolseley, the 1st Viscount Nuffield for £730,000
using his own money, Morris also renamed the
company Wolseley Motors Ltd, he also
consolidated its production at the sprawling
Ward End Works based in Birmingham

1935: Wolseley became a subsidiary of Morris
Motor Company with Wolseley models becoming
based on Morris designs

1938: Wolseley became part of the Nuffield
Organisation along with Morris and
Riley/Autovia, After the war, Wolseley and
Morris production was consolidated at Cowley
when badge engineering took hold.

1949: After World War 2, Japan venture
reorganized its self into Isuzu Motors
-
1972: Wolseley continued production in a
diminished form
-
1975: The Wolseley
ended production
