Founding of the Vauxhall motor car company
In 1857 Alexander Wilson founded the company
and was Originally named Alex Wilson and Company
it then then changed to Vauxhall Iron Works
which had built pumps and engines. The company
was based in an area called Vauxhall in South
London from where the company took its name.

to Luton trading as trade under Vauxhall Iron

The name of the company changed to Vauxhall

1925: GM (General Motors) bought Vauxhall

1929:
This was the year of the Wall Street crash
which started the Great Depression and the
car business was badly affected

1930 - 1939:
As the economy recovered from the stock
market crash Motor Car companies thrived and
less wealthy people began to purchase motor
vehicles

1939 - 1945:
WW11. Production and design of motor cars
basically ceased as all manufacturing
resources became involved with the war
effort. During World War two, Vauxhall
designed the Churchill tank as car
production had been suspended

1960:
In 1960 the company expanded and opened
a manufacturing plant in Ellesmere Port. The
most popular models of the 1960's were the
Viva and the Victor

1970s: Most Vauxhall styles were based on
models made by Opel in Germany including such
models as the Corsa, Astra, Vectra and Omega.
Opel models are also sold under other GM brand
names, such as Vauxhall in the UK

1975: By 1975 two models, the Chevette
and the Cavalier, were competing with Ford
Motors

1979: Vauxhall moved into the hatchback
market with its Astra range of cars that
replaced the Vauxhall Viva

1980's: The MK2 Cavalier was Vauxhall's
most inportant model of the 80s.

1986: Sponsorship - Vauxhall sponsored
the Football Conference, the highest non-league
division of English football from 1986 until
1998.

1986: The Carlton re-launched and was
voted European Car of the Year

1989: The Calibra
coupe was launched

1991: The Astra was re-launched

1993: The Nova was axed in favour of the
Corsa. The Cavalier was one of the best selling
Vauxhall cars

1994:
GM ceased production of Bedford vehicles
which had been Vauxhall's commercial
vehicles (vans, trucks and lorries). Bedford
Van production continued at Luton under the
Vauxhall name

1995: Vauxhall adopted the Vectra
nameplate

2000: The updated Corsa was launched

2002: The second generation Vectra went
on sale

2006: The Zafira in 2006 was Britain's
10th best selling car
The griffin emblem of Vauxhall
The griffin emblem, which is still used today,
comes from the coat of arms of Faulke de Breaute
who was a medieval mercenary soldier. King John
granted the Manor of Luton for his services in
the thirteenth century and he he also had the
rights to land south of the Thames. He built a
house called Fulk's hall which, as time went by,
became known as Vauxhall. Vauxhall Motors used
the emblem for Vauxhall to emphasise its links
to the local area where the company originated.
