Triumph Dolomite Roadster Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
1937: The Triumph Dolomite Roadster was an
open version of the 14/60, featuring a single
bench that could seat 3 people, with 2
additional outside seat in the tail. It also
featured a 1767cc engine with twin SU
carburettors.
1938: July: A longer wheel base version became
available in a saloon, powered with a 1991cc
engine with triple SU carburettors. There were
no power output figures for the Triumph Dolomite
Roadster, however a BMW with a very similar
engine at the same time, a straight 6 almost the
same size with three carburettors, had a power
output of 80bhp.
Triumph Dolomite's were very well equipped with,
winding windows in the doors, automatic chassis
lubrication, dual hydraulic brake circuits, a
leather bound steering wheel that was adjustable
for rake and reach, twin trumpet horns,
spot lamps all included and a tray of fitted
tools that slotted under the driver's seat
cushion. For an extra 18 guineas, buyers could
specify a radio.
The body of the Triumph Dolomite Roadster was
built from aluminium over a rot-proofed wooden
frame, the radiator followed an American trend
by being hidden behind a flamboyant shining
metal grill. The British market was very
conservative, so before production of the
Dolomite was suspended, Triumph introduced a
Vitesse branded version which the grill had been
removed, this exposed the radiator in a
traditional manor.
1939: With the onset of War, car production
stopped, the factory in which the aluminium
bodies were made were taken over for aircraft
manufacturing.
