Triumph 1800 Roadster Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
1946: The Triumph 1800 Roadster was produced
by Triumph Motor Company, there first post war
car. With steel shortages due to the war, the
car bodies were made from aluminium, using
rubber press tools used for making parts for the
largely wooden bodied Mosquito bomber built by
Standard during the war, the cars chassis was
hand welded from steel tube. The engine used was
based on the 1.5litre, four cylinder Standard
design that had been supplied to Jaguar.
With a four gear, gearbox with synchromesh on
the top three ratios. The chassis featured
transverse leaf sprung independent suspension at
the front with a live axle featuring half
elliptic springs at the rear. The track at the
rear was narrower to that at the front, the car
also featured hydraulic brakes.
The front of the Roadster had large separate
headlamps with a radiator set well back from the
front, between large "coal scuttle" wings. The
car claimed to seat 3 along a bench seat, with
the cars width this was possible however, a
column gear change was required. With the width,
the narrow windscreen required three screen
wipers, this would later be followed by the
Jaguar E Type with the same problem. Additional
seating for 2 was supplied in the form of a
Dickey Seat in the rear with its own folding
windscreen. The Dickey Seat was outside the
canopy that could be erected to cover the front
seats. Getting in and out of the Dickey Seat was
never easy and a step on the rear bumper was
provided.
