Triumph 10/20 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
1923: The Triumph 10/20 was introduced,
Triumph's first car, named after the Royal
Automobile Club's taxation class of 10
horsepower rating and its actual output of 20
horsepower. The car was primarily designed by
Arthur Alderson who was assisted by Alan Lea and
Arthur Sykes, they were employed by Lea-Francis
with Triumph paying them a royalty on every car
made. The Triumph 10/20 was powered by a 1.4
litre or 1393cc, 4 cylinder side valve engine,
designed by Harry Ricardo, fitted with a single
up draught Zenith carburettor. The 1.4litre
engine produced 23.5 bhp at 3000rpm, this gave
the car a top speed of 52mph and covered 40
miles per gallon. The gear box consisting of
four gears was centrally mounted and coupled to
the engine via a short drive shaft.
When the Triumph 10/20 was launched, it came
with 2 seats in an open tourer, there were
provisions for a third passenger, in a dickey
seat that would not be made by Triumph, instead
bought in from the Regent Carriage Company of
London. A sports model soon followed featuring
aluminium body panels and long wings.
1924: A fabric covered version was available, a
four seater Weymann saloon featuring a single
door on the drivers side with two doors on the
passenger side. The Weymann saloon had a wheel
base of 2591mm making it the largest car out of
the light cars of its time. This was to be the
first production car in Briton to feature
hydraulic brakes, only fitted at the rear to
begin with.
1926: production stop.
