Background of Kiichiro Toyoda:
Kiichiro Toyoda was the son of Sakichi Toyoda a Japanese inventor who had invented numerous weaving devices and founder of the Toyoda Loom Works. Before he died Sakichi Toyoda had told his son to follow his dream and to create motor cars in 1937 Toyota Motor Co Ltd was established a spin-off from the Toyoda Loom. Works. Kiichiro Toyoda had two children Shoichiro and Tatsura.

1894: Kiichiro Toyoda was born.

1929: In 1929 Kiichiro traveled to Europe and the United States to investigate automobiles.

1936: In 1936 Toyota’s logo established.

1937: In 1937 The Toyota Motor Co Ltd was established. The name changed from Toyoda to Toyota, as Toyota is considered luckier than Toyoda in Japan.

1939 - 1945: WW11. Production and design of motor cars basically ceased as all manufacturing resources became involved with the war effort. During the war the company produced trucks for the Imperial Japanese Army.

1947: In 1947 production started on the SA model and was sold under the name Toyopet, (the name was later dropped when Toyota moved into the American market. due to connotations of Toys and pets.)

1948: In 1948 Kiichiro Toyoda resigned due to poor sales.

1950: In 1950 Toyota Motor Sales was established.

1952: In 1952 Kiichiro Toyoda died.

1957: In 1957 Eiji Toyoda, (Kiichiro Toyoda’s cousin) became head of Toyota Motor Company. Also in that year the first Japanese car “Crown” was exported to USA. (It was Eiji who decided to compete in the luxury car market with the introduction of Lexus.)

1963: In 1963 at Port Melbourne, Australia the first Toyota was built outside of Japan.

1973: In 1973 There was an international oil crisis due to the Middle East War, Japan who was dependent on imports for its oil supply was badly affected, Eiji Toyoda began turning to small cars with better fuel economy.

1989: In 1989 the Lexus was launched the Lexus L S was the first vehicle to wear the Lexus marque. Lexus a luxury vehicle has developed a reputation for it’s reliability and customer service.

1990: In the 1990’s Toyota branched out making larger and more luxurious vehicles including a full size pickup.

1994: In 1994 Eiji Toyoda at the age of 81 stepped down as chairman of Toyota.

1997: In 1997 the first Hybrid electric car manufactured by Toyota Motor Corporation went on sale in Japan it was called the Prius and was the first mass produced hybrid vehicle.

1998: In 1998 Toyota purchased a majority stake in Daihatsu. extending its hold over the domestic market.

2001: In 2001 The Prius was introduced worldwide.
