1909: in 1909 Michio Suzuki founded the
Suzuki Loom Company in Hamamatsu, Japan.
1929: This was the year of the Wall Street
crash, which started the Great Depression, and
the car business was badly affected.
1930 - 1939: As the economy recovered from the
stock market crash Motor Car companies thrived
and less wealthy people began to purchase motor
vehicles. Suzuki began a new project and made
several prototype cars.
1939 - 1945: WW11. Production and design of
motor cars basically ceased as all manufacturing
resources became involved with the war effort.
Suzuki went back to producing looms towards the
end of the war, as new vehicles had been halted
when the government declared civilian cars were
non-essential.
1951: In 1951 the cotton market collapsed and
Michio Suzuki thoughts went back to motor
vehicles and he designed an engine that could be
attached to a bicycle.
1952: In 1952 Suzuki built a motorized bicycle
called the Power Free. Japan had a need for
inexpensive reliable transport.
1954: In 1954 producing 6,000 motorcyles a month
they changed their name to Suzuki Motor Co Ltd.
1955: In 1955 The Suzulight was created by
Suzuki, the Suzulight was Japan’s first
lightweight car and it was very successful.
1961: In 1961 The Suzulight Carry FB is Suzuki’s
first light truck.
1968: In 1968 Suzuki bought Hope Motor Company,
a Japenese car company. Hope originally
developed HopeStar ON360 a basic, reliable 4
wheel drive and Suzuki got the production
rights, Suzuki used the HopeStar as the basis
for their Jimny 360, otherwise known as the LJ10
or the Brute IV.
1970: In 1970 after two years of development,
Jimny 360 became the first mass-produced 4x4 in
Japan's domestic mini-car class.
1981: In 1981 General Motors purchases a 3%
stake in Suzuki.(General Motors are the worlds
second largest automaker).
1983: In 1983 Suzuki introduced the first four
wheel ATV, the QuadRunner.
1985: Since 1985 Suzuki has produced automobiles
for other manufacturers around the world.
1990: In 1990 The company name changes to Suzuki
Motor Corporation.
1997: In 1997 The Company sold approximately two
million vehicles.
2001: In 2001 General Motors held a 20% stake in
Suzuki.
