Maudslay (1871-1934) in Coventry, England

1903: In 1903 the Standard Motor Company was
founded. The first Standard was a 6hp single
cylinder 'Motor Victoria'.
1905: In 1905 at the London Motor Show in
Crystal Palace the company took a stand Charles
(later Sir Charles) Friswell agreed to take the
entire factory output.
1906: In 1906 the Standard Ten was produced
1907: In 1907 Charles Friswell became Chairman
of the company.
1911: In 1911 Charles Friswell supplied 70 cars
for King George V and his entourage at the Delhi
Royal Durbah.
1912: In 1912 Friswell sold his interest in
Standard to C.J. Band and Siegried Bettmann the
founder of the Triumph Motor Cycle Company which
later became the Triumph Motor Company.
1914-1918: During WWI, Standard became a public
company.
1919: In 1919 Civilian car production restarted
with a range of small cars.
1924: In 1924 the Company were making over
10,000 cars
1929: In 1929 this was the year of the Wall
Street crash which started the Great Depression
and the car business was badly affected.
1930 - 1939: As the economy recovered from the
stock market crash Motor Car companies thrived
and less wealthy people began to purchase motor
vehicles. In 1938 The Standard Eight was
produced in saloon, de luxe and tourer forms,
the car was originally launched as the Flying
Eight, after the Second World War the Flying
range of Standards was dropped. Reginald
Maudslay left the company and died shortly
afterwards at the age of 64.
1939 - 1945: WW11. Production and design of non
military cars effectively ceased as all UK
manufacturing resources were utilized in the war
effort. In 1945 The
Triumph
Company was acquired by the Standard Motor
Company.
1947: In 1947 the Standard Vanguard was launched
one of its most famous and successful post-war
models, with no resemblance to the previous
models, the Vanguard was a success and sold well
at home and abroad.
1953: In 1953 the Standard Eight was launched, a
completely new car sharing virtually nothing
with its predecessors.
1956: In 1956 the Vanguard Sportsman debuted the
Sportsman featured two-tone paintwork on its
stylish four door body and a wide front grille,
the standard version had a bench front seat but
separate seats were an option,901 examples of
the Sportsman model were made.
1959: In 1959 the Standard Eight was dropped and
replaced by the Triumph Herald following
the decision to phase out the Standard brand in
favour of Triumph.
1960: In 1960 the company was taken over Leyland
Motors Ltd.
1962: In 1962 the Standard Vanguard was replaced
with the Ensign De Luxe and came with choice of
either saloon or estate body, a floor change,
four speed gearbox was standard with overdrive
and disc brakes being available as options.,
2318 were produced.
1963: In 1963 the Standard Ensign and the
Standard Vanguard were replaced by the Triumph
2000 and the Standard name disappeared from the
British car market after 60 years of production.
