The History of Saab motor car company began when it was founded in 1947 by Svenska Aeroplan AB in Trollhättan, Sweden. Saab in 1937 was originally a division of the Swedish Aeroplane Company (Svenska Aeroplan AB). building aircraft for the Swedish Air Force. With World War ll coming to an end, Saab decided to go into a different market and began manufacturing motor cars.

1947: In 1947 SAAB ( Svenska Aeroplan AB) was founded in Trollhättan, Sweden. The company merged with ASJA who made aircraft in Linkoping, Sweden, and the company moved there. Saab went in to a different market and manufactured motor cars; their first was the SAAB 92001. The car division was based in Trollhättan. The 92001 was Saab’s first prototype.

1949: In 1949 a full scale production started on the SAAB 92 a two door coupe.

1950: In the 1950’s SAAB was replaced with Saab. 1,246 cars were manufactured all of them green, as it has been said that green was the only colour they had left over from their wartime aircraft production.

1955: In 1955 More colours were introduced Moss green, Grey and Maroon.

1956: In 1956 Saab’s first sport’s car is the Sonett just six were produced.

1968: In 1968 the Saab 99 Sedan, a larger model to give passengers more room and comfort came in to production. The 99 was the first turbocharged model for Saab.

1970: In 1970 Saab installs headlight wipers and washers a world first.

1987: In 1987 there was heavy losses and the company cut costs.

1990: In 1990 General Motors bought 50% of Saab. General Motors are the world's second largest automobile manufacturer.

1993: In 1993 With General Motors involvement came the launch of the Saab 900.

1995: In 1995 Saab declared a profit.

2000: In 2000 General Motors buys the remainder of Saab.

2005: In 2005 General Motors announced production on the Saab 9-5 will move from Trollhättan to Rüsselsheim, Germany in 2009.
