Information about John Kemp Starley
Lifespan: 1854 - 1901
John Kemp Starley was born in 1854 in
Walthamstow, Essex and was the son of gardener,
he went to work for his uncle in Coventry
building Ariel cycles. In 1885 he made history
when he produced the Rover Safety Bicycle which
became a success and was exported all over the
world. He died suddenly in 1901.

1877: In 1877
John Kemp Starley and William Sutton originally
founded Starley & Sutton Co. in Coventry,
England manufacting Bicycles.
1883: In 1883 Rover 'Safety' cycles are
introduced using the name 'Rover' for the very
first time.
1888: John Starley made an electric car, that
never went into production.
1889: In 1889 the company became J. K. Starley &
Co. Ltd
1890: In 1890 it then become Rover Cycle Company
Ltd.
1901: In 1901 John Starley died at the young age
of 46 and Harry Smith took over as managing
director of the company.
1904: In 1904 three years after John Starley’s
death the company began producing automobiles
the two seater Rover Eight was their first
production designed by Edmund Lewis who had
joined Rover from Daimler.
1906: In 1906 Bicycle production stops and
production switches to cars only.
1914-1918 WW1 during the war the company made
motorcycles.
1929: This was the year of the Wall Street crash
which started the Great Depression and the car
business was badly affected.
1930 - 1939: As the economy recovered from the
stock market crash Motor Car companies thrived
and less wealthy people began to purchase motor
vehicles. In 1931 for the Motor show, Rover
produced the Scarab it was to sell for £85 but
it never went into production.
1939 - 1945: WW11. Production and design of
motor cars basically ceased as all manufacturing
resources became involved with the war effort.
1948: In 1948 they launched the very successful
Land Rover an all-terrain vehicle.
1951: In 1951 Land Rovers out-sell all other
Rover vehicles 2 to 1.
1958: In 1958 the Rover P5 was produced it was a
very large and distinguished looking car with
luxurious interior, it was very popular with &
government officials including Prime Minister
Harold Wilson. And today is becoming it is
becoming collector’s car.
1964: In 1964 the Rover 2000 won European Car of
the Year. The car featured all-round seat belts
and won industry awards for Safety when it was
introduced.
1967: In 1967 Rover became part of the Leyland
Motor Corporation (LMC) as a LMC/BL subsidiary
(1967–1986)
1968: In 1968 LMC merged with British Motor
Holdings (BMH) to form British Leyland, and all
British Leyland cars would now be made at the
Morris factory in Cowley or Austin's Longbridge.
1976: In 1976 the One Millionth Land Rover is
produced.
1978: BL established Land Rover Limited as a
separate subsidiary—it took over Range Rover
production.
1988: In 1988 British Aerospace take over the
Rover Group.
1982: In1982 Princess Grace of Monaco and her
daughter Princess Stephanie were involved in an
accident in their Rover 3500 P4, another of the
company's upmarket cars. Princess Grace had
suffered a stroke at the wheel, causing the car
to run off the road. She died the next day.
1994: British Aerospace sells the Rover Group to
BMW.
2000: BMW sell Land Rover to Ford.
2003: In 2003 The Rover Streetwise was produced,
a small car to appeal to the younger drivers, a
well built inexpensive car.
2005: In 2005 The Rover Streetwise was no longer
produced and MG Rover went into liquidation.
