The Peugeot motor car company The following company information and history timeline details the dates of major events which influenced the growth of the business. 1889: Armand Peugeot became very interested in automobiles, after meeting with Gottlieb Daimler and others, he was convinced of its commercial viability. Peugeot's first vehicle was a steam powered three wheeler designed by Leon Serpollet, they only made 4 examples of this vehicle, they suffered from being both heavy and bulky, and required an excessive amount of time to raise steam from cold 1890: After meeting with Gottlieb Daimler and Emile Levassor, the steam car was in favour of a four wheeled internal combustion engine powered car, built by Panhard under Daimler licensing. 1895: Peugeot became the first company to fit rubber tyres to a petrol powered car. 1896: Peugeot build their first engine designed by Rigoulot and no longer had to pay Daimler a licence fee. 1896: Armand Peugeot broke his ties with Les Fils de Peugeot Freres so he could form his own company dedicated to automobile production, called Societe Anonyme des Automobiles Peugeot. 1903: Peugeot begins producing Motorcycles 1903: Peugeot produced half of all cars built in France 1907: Tony Huber joined Peugeot as an engine builder 1910: A new factory opened in Sochaux 1912: Ettore "Bugatti" designs the new Bebe, and the Peugeot team starts racing with a team of driver engineers consisting of: Jules Goux, Paolo Zuccarelli, Georges Boillot and Swiss engineer Ernest Henry 1914: WWI starts and Peugeot turns to manufacturing munitions and military vehicles 1919: Car production and racing restart 1926: Peugeot separates the cycle business forming Cycles Peugeot 1927: Cycles Peugeot takes over the defunct Bellanger and Dion companies 1928: Sochaux plant becomes Peugeot's main car plant 1929: Peugeot produce their cheapest car, the 201 1931: The Depression hit Peugeot with sales falling dramatically 1933: Peugeot unveils a new line of aerodynamically styled vehicles 1941: Car production continued during France's occupation by the Nazis 1945: February: After the War, Peugeot 202 cars were made from existing stocks of parts 1946: The company restarts full car production 1950: Peugeot takes over Chenard-Walcker and buys a stake in Hotchkiss 1958: Peugeot starts selling cars in the United States 1966: Peugeot starts working with Renault 1972: Peugeot starts working with Volvo 1974: Peugeot buys 30% of Citroen 1975: Peugeot buys the reminder of Citroen with the French Government aid, a new joint parent company formed called the PSA group allowing the identities of Peugeot and Citroen brands to remain separate 1975: Peugeot gains control of Maserati 1978: Peugeot takes over the European division of Chrysler due to the American companies financial problems 1980-1985: PSA group struggles financially, a result of over investment in other car producers 1983: Peugeot launch the Peugeot 205, turning the companies fortunes around 1984: PSA develop a relationship with The People's Republic of China, this lead to the successful Dongfeng Peugeot-Citroen Automobile venture in Wuhan 1986: Peugeot drops the Talbot name, and former Rootes factories in Ryton and Simca turned into Peugeot production lines, Peugeot production at Ryton was significant as it was the first Peugeot factory in Britain 1991: Poor sales in the U.S. and Canada result in the decision to cease operations in the U.S. and Canada 2006: PSA Peugeot Citroen announce that manufacturing in Ryton, Coventry, England is to cease 2007: Manufacturing in Ryton in Coventry, England ceases 2008: Peugeot fails to meet it's annual 4 million car target by 50%
2009: By mid

and operating losses, this lead to Christian Streiff being replaced by Philippe Varin (CEO)
