Founded in September 1900, by James Ward
Packard, William Doud Packard and their partner,
George Lewis Weiss

1899: James
Ward Packard
had purchased a Winton car and was
unsatisfied, he decided to write to Alexander
Winton with his complaint and suggestions, Mr
Winton was not impressed and very offended, so
he challenged Packard to build a better car
so Packard did, Packard's marque would go
on to out last Winton's by many decades
1900: Ohio Automobile Company was
formed to manufacturer of their cars while
they stayed Packard and were sold as Packard
1902: October 2nd: Impressed by its
reliability, Henry Bourne Joy, one of the
wealthiest families in Detroit, visited
Packard's and enlisted a group of investors such
as, Truman Handy Newberry and Russell A, Alger
Jr. They refinanced and renamed the company
Packard Motor Car Company, with James Ward
Packard as president, Russell A, Alger Jr would
later become vice president, also Henry Bourne
Joy would become general manager and later
chairman of the board
1902: October 13th: Introduction of the
Packard Motor Car Company
1903: Packard plant on East Grand Boulevard in
Detroit opened, at the time it was said it was
the world's most
modern automobile manufacturing facility
1923: Packard start's using their own Series
formula to differentiate its model changeovers
1926: Packard inducted into the Automobile Hall
of fame, Macauley took the company to
the number one position of design and production
of luxury cars in the United States, the company
was also highly competitive abroad with markets
in sixty one countries
1935: Packard introduce their first sub $1000
car resulting production tripling
1936: Production doubled again
1939: World War begins and
Packard begins building airplane engines,
notably the Rolls Royce Merlin
1946: Like most other US car makers, Packard
begin building automobiles again
1950's: James Nance, Packard's president,
believed Packard could no longer survive alone and
purchased Studebaker, unaware of
Studebaker's
financial problems, this resulted in Packard being
adversely affected by
Studebaker
1954: In the early 50's Packard unsuccessfully
produced a
restyled "bathtub" model, unable to afford a new
design, then Packard stylist Richard
Teague was called upon by James Nance to
redesign the old body yet again
1955: The new Packard was a sensation when it
appeared, unfortunately Cadillac had already
captured the luxury market, and sales of
Packard's dropped again
1955: Packard was the last automaker to
introduce a high compression V8
1956: The 1955 model was updated, but again,
unsuccessfully
1957: Studebaker's president, based a car
bearing the Packard Clipper nameplate on the
market until 1958, due to slow sales he was unable to
keep the marque afloat
1959: Studebaker-Packard pull the Packard
nameplate from the marketplace in order to focus
on their comeback
1960's: Studebaker-Packard approached by French
car maker, Facel-Vega, regarding possibilities
in rebadging their Facel-Vega Excellence sedan
as a Packard for sales in North America,
unfortunately the proposal was rejected due to
Daimler Benz threatening to pull out of
marketing and distribution agreement from 1958,
If this were to happen, it would cost
Studebaker-Packard more than they
could have made with the badge-engineered
Packard
1995: Former Phoenix residents Roy and Barbara
Gullickson purchased the rights to the Packard
name and built a new V12 powered luxury sedan,
hoping it would attract support for a short
production period.
2003: The V12 luxury sedan was shown at the
Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance
2009: The V12 luxury sedan was up for auction in
June on Ebay
2009: Mr Gullickson has abandoned the project
and has also announced he is seeking to sell his
interest in the project for $1.5
million.
