January 1863 by Adam Opel, in a cowshed in Russelsheim,
Hesse, Germany.

founded by Adam Opel, producing sewing machines
1886: Began producing and selling high wheel
bicycles known as Peny

1888: Production moved from a cowshed to a
big premises in Russelsheim
1895: Adam Opel was the leader in both sewing machines and high wheel bicycles at
the time of his death
1899: After Adam Opel's death, his sons entered
into a partnership with Friedrich Lutzmann, a
locksmith based in the court in Dessau in
Saxony-Anhalt, he had been working on designs
for an automobile for some time
1901: Partner ship with Friedrich Lutzmann was
dissolved due to his cars being un-successful,
after this, the Opel sons signed a licensing
agreement with French Automobiles, Darracq S.A.
They would produce a brand of Opel-Darracq's
1902: Opel showed their first car designs at the
Hamburg Motor Show
1906: Opel start manufacturing their own
automobiles
1907: Opel discontinue Opel-Darracq production
1911: Opel's factory was pretty much destroyed
by fire, so a new one was built with up to date
machinery, the same year, sewing machine
production stopped
1913: Opel became Germans largest car maker
1924: Installed Germany's first car production
line
1929: General Motors impressed with Opel's
modern facilities, buys 80% of the company
1931: General Motors buys 100% of the company
and
builds a second factory in Brandenburg
1937: Bicycle production ends
1940: Company seized by the Nazi regime
following the out break of World War 2 and car
production ceased
1947: Passenger car production resumed
1948: GM regained control over Opel
1950: Factory in Russelsheim rebuilt
1958: Opel's sold in the USA with their own name
1962: Opel's 100th year anniversary, a new
factory opened in Bochum
1972: Opel is again, Germany's biggest car
producer
1975: Opel's sold in the USA were sold through
Buick dealers as captive imports
1982: New factory built in Figueruelas,
Zaragoza, Aragon, Spain
2009: Opel's future was thrown into uncertainty
as the global financial crisis drove
GM towards
bankruptcy
2009: September 10th: Majority stake of 55% was
to be bought by Magna, a Canadian automobile
parts manufacturer and Sberbank, a Russian bank
2009: November 3rd:
GM board calls of the Magna
deal, after concluding Opel was crucial to
