producing cars
1899: Ransom E. Olds sells company, company
renamed Olds Motor Works and is moved to Detroit
1901: Olds Motor Works produced 425 cars
making it the first high volume automobile
manufacturer
1901: March: Olds Motor Works has a line of
models ready for production, unfortunately, a
mistake made by one of the workers set fire to
the factory and burned it to the ground along
with all the prototype cars apart from
the Curved Dash
1901-1904: The Curved Dash from Oldsmobile
becomes
the first mass production car
1908:
Oldsmobile purchased by
General Motors
1937: Oldsmobile introduce a
four speed, semi automatic transmission called
the
"Automatic Safety Transmission"
1942: Last pre war Oldsmobile finished on
February 5th, company turns to producing
large calibre guns and shells and other war
related products
1945: October 15th: Car production resumed
with a modified 1942 design
1949: New Rocket engine, an
overhead valve V8 design, rather than the
original flathead straight 8
1958: Oldsmobile suffers from the post
war recession with falling sales
j1960's: Oldsmobile's position between
Buick
and Pontiac in
GM's
hierarchy begins to fall
1976: The Oldsmobile Cutlass series becomes North America's
top selling car
1977: Demand for the Rocket V8 Oldsmobile
exceeds production capacity, the
Delta 88 models receive the
Chevrolet 350
engine instead, purchasers unaware they had the
Chevrolet
V8 until they performed routene maintenance, customers
were angry that they had not got the Rocket V8, this caused a public
relations nightmare for
GM
1990: The Oldsmobile had lost its place in the
market, Chevrolet and
Pontiac taking over,
with Oldsmobile sporadically being used to
showcase futuristic designs and being used as a
guinea pig for testing new technology
2004: April 29: Final production day for
Oldsmobile
