Founding of the Nissan motor car company
Yoshisuke Aikawa founded the holding company
Nippon Sangyo in 1928, "Nissan" originated in
the 1930's as an abbreviation used in the Tokyo
stock market for Nippon Sangyo. Nissan became
known as the famous Nissan "Zaibatsu" (combine),
once it aquired Tobata Casting and Hitachi.
During this time Nissan controlled foundries and
auto part businesses however, Nissan didn't
start manufacturing automobiles until 1933.
Aikawa purchased controlling shares in DAT
Motors in 1931, and in 1933 merged Tobata
Casting's automobile parts department with DAT
Motors, Tobata Casting being a Nissan company
resulted in Nissan's entry into automobile
manufacturing.
The Nissan Motor Co Ltd was created in 1934 when
Aikawa expanded and separated divisions of
Tobata Castings incorporating it as a
subsidiary. Shareholders in the new company were
not very enthusiastic about the future of the
automobile industry in Japan, so, Aikawa bought all
the shares owned by Tobata Casting in 1934. As
this happened, Nippon Sangyo and Hitachi
effectively became the owners of Nissan.
During WWII
Nissan produced trucks, airplanes and engines
for the Japanese military. The company moved to
chine due to land being captured by Japan. The
new factory made machinery for the Japanese war
effort up until the time it was captured by
allied forces. Between 1947
and 1948 the company was operated as Nissan Heavy
Industries Corp.
