Founding of the MG motor car company
Morris Garages was founded by William Morris
in Oxford, England, but no cars were marketed as
MG's until 1924 at which time a new separate
brand identity was deemed desirable for sports
cars separate to the existing
Morris
brand

Background
of William Morris
William Morris was born in Worcester England. At
the age of 15
he became an apprentice to a local
bicycle repairer shop, later he acquired a small garage
where he repaired, sold and hired cars. William
Morris
married Elizabeth Anstey on the 9th April 1904,
but the couple never had any children. William
Morris was made a
Viscount in 1938 and he founded the Nuffield
Foundation in 1943 to “advance social well
being” and also founded the Nuffield College. Having no children,
following his death in August 1963, a large
amount of his fortune was bequeathed to charitable causes.
It is of note that Nuffield Place, William
Morris's former home, is open to the public.
History

company information and history timeline details
the dates of major events which influenced the
growth of the business.
1877: William
Morris was born.
1902: In 1902 William Morris set up a garage in
Longwall Street Oxford where he repaired and
sold cars.
1912: William Morris produces his first car, the
Morris Oxford Bullnose. It was named Oxford in
recognition of its home city, and Bullnose to
describe it's distinctive radiator shape.
1914 – 1918: During WWI the car factory produced Ammunition.
1919: Car production recommenced.
1921: Cecil Kimber joined Morris Garages
as Sales Manager.
1922: Cecil Kimber was promoted to
General Manager (Cecil Kimber with Morris
founded MG).
1924: In 1924 Morris Garages were advertising
the "MG Special four-seater Sports" The badge
still read Morris Oxford, MG badges did not
appear until a few years later.
1927: William Morris purchased the
bankrupt Wolseley Motor Company.
1928: The MG Car Company Limited became
separate from the original
Morris Garages and the
Morris Minor was launched.
1929: This was the year of the Wall Street
crash, which started the Great Depression, and
the car business was badly affected.
Morris
Garages moved to Abingdon and became the MG
Motor Company and William Morris was
created a baronet.
1930 - 1939: As the economy recovered from the
stock market crash Motor Car companies thrived
and less wealthy people began to purchase motor
vehicles. In 1930. Cecil Kimber became managing
director. In 1938 William Morris was made a
Viscount and he become Lord Nuffield, he also purchased
Riley and Autovia and formed
the Nuffield
Organisation.
1939 - 1945: WW11. Production and design of
motor cars basically ceased as all manufacturing
resources became involved with the war effort.
In 1941 Cecil Kimber fell out with Lord Nuffield
over procuring wartime work and was asked to
resign. Cecil Kimber was killed in a freak
railway accident in 1945.
1952: The Nuffield Organisation merged with
the Austin Motor Group
and formed the British
Motor Corporation.
1968: British Leyland was formed and BMC
became part of it.
1975: The company was nationalized after it
ran into financial difficulties.
1980: The Abingdon factory was closed
and MGB production ceased.
1984: The Morris Ital was the last
Morris-badged car.
1988: British Aerospace bought the
company.
1994: BMW bought the company.
2000: In 2000 BMW decided to sell as
Rover was
making losses. MG became part of MG Rover Group
based at Longbridge Birmingham.
2005: MG Rover went into administration and Nanjing Automobile, a Chinese
carmaker, purchased the assets.
2007: SAIC (Shanghai Automotive Industry
Corporation) took over Nanjing Automobile
company.
