Founding of the Land Rover motor car company
Land Rover's first vehicle dates back
to 1948, when Maurice Wilkes Chief designer of
British car manufacturer Rover, designed with
his brother, the first Land Rover for use on his
own farm in Newborough on the island on the
island of Anglesey in Wales in the UK, his
design was strongly influenced by the
American WW2
Jeep.

1948: At the Genvena motor show, the Land Rover
Series 1 is launched.
1958: Land Rover Series 2 launched
1961: Land Rover Series 2A Launched
1967: Rover becomes part of Leyland Motors
Ltd, later British Leyland as
Rover-Triumph
1970:
Range Rover introduced
1971: Land Rover Series 3 launched
1975:Britsh Leyland collapses and is
nationalised, the Ryder Report recommends Land Rover
split from
Rover and become a separate company
within British Leyland, becoming a commercial
vehicle division called the Land Rover Leyland
Group.
1976: The One millionth Land Rover leaves the
production line
1978: Land Rover Limited formed, a
subsidiary of British Leyland
1980: 5 door
Range
Rover introduced.
Rover car
production ends at Solihull, transfer of SD1
production to Cowley, Oxford, Solihull now
exclusively used for Land Rover production.
1983: The Land Rover 90/ 110 introduced
1986: British Leyland plc becomes
Rover
Group plc; Project Llama begins
1987: March 16,

Rover introduced to the US market
1988: Rover
Group becomes part of British Aerospace
following privatisation, and is known as

1989: Discovery introduced
1994:
Range Rover second generation introduced,

1997: Special Edition Discovery XD finished in "AA" yellow paint
introduced for sale in the North American market.
1997: Freelander introduced
1998: Second generation of Discovery's

2000: BMW
breaks up the
Rover Group, selling Land Rover to
Ford for
£1.8 billion
2002: Third generation
Range
Rover introduced
2004: Third generation Discovery/LR3 introduced
2005:
Range Rover Sport introduced fitted with an
adapted Jaguar
AJ-V8 engine replacing the
BMW M62 V8
2006: Second generation Freelander introduced, a
new 2.4 litre diesel engine, 6 speed gearbox,
dash and forward facing rear seats for defender
announced.
2007: 8th May, 4,000,000th Land Rover rolls off
the production line and a Discovery 3 donated to
the Born Free Foundation. August, Tata Motors of
India and Mahindra as well as financial sponsors
Cerberus Capital Management and Apollo
Management express interest in purchasing
Jaguar
Cars and Land Rover from
Ford Motor
Company.
2008: 26th March, Ford agrees to sell
Jaguar and
Land Rover operations to Tata Motors, Purchase of
Jaguar and Land Rover from
Ford
finalised on the 2nd June.
