The Jowett motor car company
Founding of the Jowett motor car company Jowett Motor Manufacturing Company, moved after the War to Springfield Works, Bradford Road, Idle, outside Bradford, as well as their location they also changed the company name to Jowett Cars Ltd. 1920 saw the new factory making new cars, by 1922 commercial vehicles were also being made based on their car chassis, these become an important source of income for the company. Jowett Cars Ltd. exhibited at the London Motor Show in 1921 which helped them break out of their limited local market. Production continued until 1931, when work was suspended briefly, due to a fire sweeping through their workshop. Jowett Cars Ltd, went public in 1935, with Benjamin Jewett retiring in 1936, followed by his brother William Jewett, lin 1940. Once both Jowett brothers had retired the company stopped building cars, but continued building motor-generator sets, aircraft components and some military hardware. Property developer, Charles Core bought the company in 1945, then sold it to bankers, Lizard Brothers in 1947.
After the
Second World War, many cars were made such as
the Jowett Javelin and the Jowett Jupiter, over the
years. The factory was then sold to
International Harvester at the end of 1954, they
made tractors until the earl 1980's. Jowett
changed to manufacturing aircraft parts, for
Blackburn & General Aircraft Company, in an old
woollen mill at Howden Clough, Birstall, near
Batley. Blackburn, in 1953, took over Jowett.
Spares for post war cars were made available until 1963,
when the remainder of the Jowett company was closed, this was due to the
rationalisation of the aircraft industry.
