apprenticeship at Crossley Motors in Manchester
where he also studied at the technical school.
He left Crossley Motors in 1919 to work as a
salesman at the Sunbeam dealers called Brown and
Mallalieu in Blackpool.

Timeline of the Jaguar motor car company
1901:
Sir William Lyons was born September 4th 1901
1921: William Walmsley worked next
door to William Lyons in Blackpool converting ex
army motor cycles to civilian use and making
sidecars.
1922: William Lyons and William Walmsley,
the two motorcycle enthusiasts, formed a
partnership and Swallow Sidecars was formed specialising in
manufacturing sidecars.
1927: Swallow Sidecars produced the Austin
Swallow a low cost car, it was an instant success.
1928: Swallow Sidecars moved from Blackpool to
Coventry.
1929: The year of the Wall Street
crash which started the Great Depression and the
car
business was badly affected.
1930 - 1939: As the economy recovered from
the stock market crash Motor Car companies
thrived
and less wealthy people began to purchase motor
vehicles for the first time.
1933: IThe company name changed to SS
Cars Ltd.
1934: William Walmsley left the company in
1934.
1935: The SS Jaguar name first appeared on a
2.5 litre saloon in 1935.
1939 - 1945: During WW2 production and design of
motor cars basically ceased as all manufacturing
resources became focused on the war effort.
1945: The company name changed from SS to Jaguar in
1945 due to the Nazi Germany association with
the initials SS.
1956: In 1956 William Lyons was knighted for
his services to British industry.
1957: An infamous factory fire at the Jaguar
works in February unfortunately
destroyed many cars including several XKSS
sports cars.
1960: Jaguar made a name for themselves for sports cars & saloons and
also bought the
Daimler
Motor Company.
1961 - 1974: The famous Jaguar E-Type was
manufactured by Jaguar between 1961 and 1974.
Enzo Ferrari said it was "The most beautiful car
ever made". The Jaguar E-Type is considered the
best Jaguar ever built.
1966: In 1966 Jaguar merged with BMC, The
British Motor Corporation was a UK motor
company.
1967: In 1967 William Lyons retired as
managing director but remained as chairman of
Jaguar Cars Ltd.
1972: William Lyons retired in 1972, and
kept prize-winning sheep and cattle on his farm
at Wappenbury.
1985: Sir William Lyons died February 8th
1985.
1990: The
Ford Motor Company purchased the
company
2008: On 2 June 2008 the sale of Jaguar to Tata Motors
of India was completed. Ratan Naval Tata is the
chairman of the Tata Group he was born December
28th 1937 in India.
