The Humber motor car company History Timeline of Humber Cars 1898 saw the first car produced, a three wheel tri car with the first four wheel car in 1901. The company being based in the UK had factories in Beeston near Nottingham and Coventry. The factory in Beeston produced Beeston- Humber's that were a more expensive range, unfortunately in 1908 the factory closed due to financial problems. In 1913 Humber became the second largest car manufacturer in the United Kingdom. Hillman lost it's independence in 1921 when the Rootes brothers bought a majority shareholding in the company. Humber began making commercial vehicles in 1925 following their acquisition of Commer. Hillman was then acquired by Hillman in 1928. In the years leading up to WWII, Humber gained a reputation for both build quality and their beautifully appointed interiors. After WW2 broke out the Humber company produced several armoured cars along with some heavy duty staff cars. IIn 1968 the last of the large traditional Humber's were sold off, Chrysler who now owned the Rootes group had "pulled the plug" on Humber.
