History of Gumpert motor car company
Roland Gumpert proposed a new generation
sports car in 2001, his first concern was for
the car to be both road legal and ready for the race
track at once. After more than 3 years in China,
Roland Gumpert returned to Germany. Back in
Germany, he became head of sales and marketing
responsible for the development of the
Audi and
VW joint enterprise. Shortly after his return to
Germany, Roland Meyer asked him to assist in
building a prototype sports car.
Audi agreed to Gunperts involvement
with the condition, if they
eventually successfully developed a new sports car it would not
be a prototype but a production car. Company GMG
Sportwagenmanufaktur Altenburg GmbH was founded
in 2004. The first car designs were drawn by
Marco Vanetta after the technical guidelines
were defined. After Marco Vanetta completed his
design process, the first 1:4 scale model of the
Gumpert car was made in 2002.
Development
continued on the Gumpert Apollo with the help of
the Technical University of Munich and the
Ingolstadt University of Applied Sciences. Both
groups have assisted with construction, computer
simulations and wind tunnel tests. All this
research and development helped form the first
blueprint for the scale 1:1 model. Two
prototypes were finally made with the Apollo
entering production in October 2005.

Sport featured on the UK show Top Gear show on
the 27th
July 2008 driven by the Stig and reaching the
top of the shows Power Lap Board beating the
Ascari A10 with a time of 1.17.1, only 0.2
seconds faster but faster nevertheless.
