Founding of the GMC motor car company
On September 16th 1908, William C. Durant
founded the company General Motors in Flint,
Michigan as a holding company for
Buick. General
Motors also acquired
Oldsmobile later that same
year. During 1909 William C. Durant also brought
Cadillac, Elmore, Oakland and several other
companies, also acquired was the Reliance Motor
Truck Company of Owosso, Michigan, Rapid Motor
Vehicle Company of Pontiac, Michigan being the
predecessors of GMC Truck. Due to a collapse in
sales and a large amount of debt taken on during
its acquisition, William C. Durant lost the
control of the company to a bankers trust in
1910. A couple years later William C. Durant
started the
Chevrolet Motor car company and
using this company he secretly purchased a
controlling interest in GM. During one of the
most dramatic proxy wars in American business
history, William C. Durant took back control of
the company. William C. Durant reorganized
General Motors company into General Motors
Corporation. Shortly after regaining control, he
lost control for good due to a new vehicle
market collapse. The post war global dominance
of the company was thanks to Alfred P. Sloan who
was carefully chosen to take charge of the
company.
It is of note
that for 77 consecutive years between 1931 to
2007 the General Motor Corporation led in
global car and auto sales .
