The Daimler motor car company was founded in Coventry in 1896, in 1910 the company became a subsidiary of BSA and was acquired in 1960 by Jaguar.

History of Daimler motor car company
IThe first Daimler left the works in January 1897 and 20 more cars had been built by July making Daimler Britain's first true production car. As Daimler was known as Britain's oldest marque it became the official transport for the British Royalty. Unfortunately in 1950, transmission failure in the king's car resulted in Rolls Royce being commissioned as the primary Royal Carriage with Daimler being the reserve.

1891:  Frederick Simms purchases the UK patent rights to Gottlieb Daimler's engine.

1893:  Company renamed to Daimler Motor Syndicate Ltd.

1895:  Harry Lawson buys the company for £35,000 and changes the name to the British Motor Syndicate, now mainly trading in patents.

1896:  To capitalise on some of the patents bought Harry Lawson founded Daimler Motor Company, based in an old disused cotton mill in Foleshill, Coventry.

1897:  The Daimler Motor Company builds the first Daimler car and Leon Bollee, MC under licence.

1898:  Daimler becomes Britain's first car marque and the official transport of Royalty.

1914:  During WWI Daimler produces engines for the British Army's newly invented tank.

1930:  Through BSA, Daimler takes over Lanchester Motor Company.

1950:  Due to a transmission failure, Rolls Royce commissioned as the main transport for Royalty in place of Daimlert.

1956:  Sangster was voted in as the new chairman. Edward Turner was made head of the automotive divisions.

1960:  Jaguar Cars acquires the Daimler name.

1989:  Ford Motor company takes over Jaguar and the the Daimler name.
