The Caterham motor car company The Caterham Seven today has a blend of it's original styling combined with modern ancillary components. The design can be traced back to Colin Chapman's 1950 original design. Colin Chapman was a Royal Air Force pilot who studied structural engineering, he went on to be a great innovator in motor sports design. Colin Chapman became a successful race car driver shortly after WWII and in 1952 founded Lotus Engineering Ltd. Chapman's vision was for a light, powerful car with high performance capability, performance guided most of his work on suspension development and his philosophy for lightness . The then Lotus Seven debuted at Earl's Court Motor Show in London in 1957, it was a fast and responsive car and probably Colin Chapman's greatest masterpiece. The Lotus Seven surpassed the earlier Lotus 6 on the track and could also be driven legally on the road. For the past 50 years the Caterham Seven's basic design has stood the test of time with its continued production. Caterham aptly named the car the Super 7 as it had became clear that the car's design was nearly impossible to improve, being very light, strong and possessing great handling properties. The series 4 was Caterham's first offering as that was the current car from Lotus at the time, however Caterham had supply problems for the series 4 so reverted back to the series 3 which was thought to have much better sales potential. Today Caterham build and supply the modern Roadsport and Superlight variants that are a direct descendent of the original Lotus 7 design proving the original car's design to have been almost flawless.
