David Buick was born in Arbroath, Angus,
Scotland, at the age of two his parents
emigrated to the United States moving to
Detroit, Michigan. David Buick worked for a
plumbing company when he left school in 1869,
Buick and a partner took it over when the
company run in to trouble in 1882. The company
became very successful with his partners
business management and Buick showing promise as
an inventor.

1869:
In 1869 Buick left school and was
employment working for a plumbing company.

1882:
In 1882 Buick and a partner took over
the plumbing business when it ran out of money.

1890:
In the 1890's Buick's interest in
combustion engines took up most of his time and
the partnership was dissolved as his partner was
becoming impatient with him and the plumbing
business was sold.

1899:
In 1899 Buick set up a new company and
began working on agricultural engines full-time,
but developed a car rather than an engine.

1902:
Buick had run out of money and set up
a second company Buick Manufacturing Company
aiming to manufacture and sell his own cars and
also to market engines to other companies. Buick
again runs out of money with only one car to
show for his work.

1903:
In 1903 Buick raised a loan from a
friend Benjamin Briscoe. (Benjamin Briscoe was
an automobile pioneer and industrialist.) With
financial help from Briscoe the Buick Motor
Company formed. By the end of 1903 James H.
Whiting took over the struggling company,
(Whiting was a founder of the Flint Wagon
Company) and moved it to his home town in Flint
Michigan.

In 1904 William C. Durant became
General Manager of Buick. (Durant, who was a
high school dropout, became a leading pioneer of
the United States automobile industry.)

1908:
In 1908 William C. Durant bought The
Buick Motor Company as part of a new company
called General Motors.

1911:
In 1911 Four years ahead of Ford,
Buick introduced its first closed-body car.

1914 - 1918:

1929:
In 1929 this was the year of the Wall
Street crash, which started the Great
Depression, and the car business was badly
affected.

1930:
In 1930 Buick was hit hard by the
great depression.

1933:
In 1933 production plummeted.

1930 - 1939:
As the economy recovered from
the stock market crash, motor Car companies
thrived and less wealthy people began to
purchase motor vehicles.

1939 - 1945: WW11.
Production and design of
motor cars basically ceased as all manufacturing
resources became involved with the war effort.
Buick helped by building aircraft engines.

1950:
In 1950 Sales rose during the post war
period.

1959:
Under Edward Rollert the new
general manger, Buick changed the names of its
entire production line. Under his leadership
production in the first four years increased by
more than 100 percent.

1960:
In the sixties sales continued to
rise.

1973:
In 1973 due to an oil embargo sales
fell.

1984:
In 1984 sales of the Buick peaked.

1991:
In 1991 Buick in the US market led all
carmakers.

2005:
Buick began consolidating its line-up.

2008:
Sales dropped. It has been said GM is considering
selling the Buick brand as a way to get out of
it's financial difficulties.
