BMW Isetta 250 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
The BMW BMW Isetta 250 was introduced in April
1955, designed from the original Italian Iso
Isetta from the firm Iso SpA. The car retained
the styling with few differences such as the
headlamps being fixed separately to the side of
the bodywork and also carrying the BMW badge
just below the windscreen. The only other
changes made were for it to be able to carry a
250cc four stroke engine from a BMW R25/3
motorcycle, along with the front suspension
being changed. The cylinder and crank case were
made from cast iron with the cylinder head being
made from aluminium. The twin bearing crankshaft
was also different being larger with reinforced
bearings. One reason for this was for the heavy
dynastart unit, this incorporated the dynamo and
self starter as one. The mixture of fuel was
provided via a Bing sliding throttle side draft
motorcycle carburettor. Another change was also
made, to the sump, enlarging it for use in the
car and being cooled by a radial fan and shroud
ducting.
The power transfer from the gearbox to the rear
wheels was unusual, a Hardy disc, a cardan joint
made of rubber, was fitted to the gearbox output
drive. Next came the cardan shaft with a second
Hardy disc located at the entrance to a chain
case. A duplex chain in an oil bath then rain to
a rigid shaft that was attached to the wheels.
The engine and gearbox unit was free from
tension with the linkage to the rear axle being
soundproofed thanks to the elaborate power
transfer. It is of note that the
Isetta could be driven on a
motorcycle license in both Germany and the UK.
