BMW 600 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
The BMW 600 was introduced in 1957 and produced
until 1959. It was partially based on the Isetta
but with four seats rather than two seats. It
had more power, a back door, a longer wheelbase
and more conventional, four wheel configuration.
The front of the BMW 600 was very similar to the
Isetta's. The BMW 600 however, had a stretched wheel
base in order to accommodate the extra seating
in the back, for a total of four seats. A single
door was also fitted to the right side of the
vehicle to allow access the rear seats. The
original Isetta's A-shaped tubular chassis was
replaced, for a more conventional perimeter
frame using box section side members with
tubular cross members. BMW used a semi trailing
arm independent suspension for the first time on
the BMW 600, which would almost be used on every
future model for the next four decades. Due to
the increased size and weight, the engine from
the Isetta would be underpowered and be no good
for the BMW 600. The BMW 600 used the engine from the
R67 motorcycle, a 582cc flat twin engine,
instead of using the R67's sequential
transmission without differential, a H-pattern
transaxle was used instead. The BMW 600 didn't even
have a fuel gauge, instead it had to fuel taps,
one lower than the other, the lower one was used
as reserve for when fuel starvation was felt
from the higher one.
