BMW 507 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
The BMW 507 TS was introduced in 1956 and
produced until 1959, it was the brainchild of
BMW importer Max Hoffman. Max Hoffman in 1954,
persuaded BMW management to create and produce a
roadster version of the 501 and 502 saloons,
they were to compete with Jaguar and Mercedes
Benz sports cars. Hoffman felt Ernst Loof's
designs were not commercially viable so he
pushed for designer Zeppo Goertz, who had
designed the 503. In November 1954, Zeppo Goertz
was hired by BMW. Engineer Fritz Fiedler was
given the assignment to design the mechanical
layout using existing parts wherever possible.
The BMW 507 debut in the summer of 1955 at the
Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York.
Despite attracting a few celebrity buyers such
as Hans Stuck and Georg Schorsch Meier, the BMW 507
never managed to reach more than 10% of sale
volumes achieved by its rivals from Stuttgart
and Mercedes Benz.
With the intention of reviving BMW's sporting
image, the BMW 507 brought BMW close to bankruptcy.
BMW lost money on every BMW 507 built. With only
having made 252, the companies losses were
great, fortunately for BMW an infusion of
capital from Herbert Quandt along with the
launch of new and cheaper models were to help
the company recover.
