BMW 502 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
The BMW 502 was introduced in 1954 at the Geneva
Motor Show, it was a response for a faster
version of the 501 and to boost BMW's reputation
for building sporting sedans. The BMW 502 used the
same body as the 501 but with a more powerful
engine to address the problem of being to slow.
This paved the way for a series of high powered
saloons.
The BMW 502 was acclaimed to be Germany's first V8
powered car, post war.
The V8 was an innovative lightweight 2580cc
engine, claimed to have a power output of
100bhp, with a published top speed of 99mph.
Soon after, a 3168cc version of the engine was
available, claiming to have 120bhp.
The BMW 502 differed from the 501 with additional
trim and a more lavish interior, with fog lights
and individual front seats becoming a standard
feature.
The car also featured innovative attention to
passive safety, featuring a robust chassis that
provided an above average side impact
protection, also an unusually short short
steering column with all the steering gear set
well back from the front of the car, the fuel
tank was located above the rear axel in order to
minimize fire risk in the event of an accident.
The BMW 502 was not just available in a saloon, BMW
also offered a Baur built two door cabriolet and
coupe version in 1954 and 1955.
