The BMW 335 was introduced in 1939 till 1941
using the 326 chassis with the chassis and
wheel base being extended to accommodate a
3485cc six cylinder engine. This car was an
entirely new design from BMW. The BMW 335 was
reported to have better than average torque with
it achieving full power at about 3500rpm, this
implied a long life and would have meant the car
would have made a particularly suitable rapid
autobahn cruiser. The BMW 335's engine was only feed
by a single carburettor and had it been in
production for longer, the introduction of twin
carburettors would have boosted the power
following the trend of Jaguar.
With the new engine and the larger weight of it,
the drum brakes and wheels from the 326 had to
be enlarged. With the BMW 335 being the first car to
offer a four speed gear box with full
synchromesh on all ratios meant BMW sustained a
reputation for innovation.
