BMW 321 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
The BMW 321 was introduced in 1938 and produced till 1941, it was then reproduced from 1945 till 1950. The BMW 321 was introduced to be a successor of the 320, they used a shortened version of the 326 chassis but was similar to the 320 features with a few changes like a modified front bumper and suspension changes.
The car was only available in a two door sedan or a two door cabriolet, they also offered the chassis only, that was suitable for a coach built body.
The engine came from the 326, a straight-6 cylinder 1971cc fed by twin Solex carbs. The 326 gear box was also used in the BMW 321.
In 1945 the American forces liberated Eisenach from German control, however by this time it had been agreed between the allies that the whole of Thuringen would fall within the Soviet occupation zone. It looked likely that the manufacturing facilities would be crated up and taken by rail to the Soviet Union as post was reparations. Before this happened, surviving workers returned from the war and began automobile production, using the pre-war designs. The man in charge of Eisenach motor bike production, Albert Seidler demonstrated a BMW 321 to Marshall Zhukov, this secured from him an order of 5 new cars. The Russians were impressed and the plant passed under control of a Soviet directed holding company focusing on vehicle production called, Sowjetische AG Maschinenbau Awtowelo.
