BMW 1500 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
The BMW 1500 was introduced in 1961 at the
Frankfurt Motor Show. It was produced from 1962
till 1966. Though modern to the eye the BMW 1500 was
very conventional, with MacPherson front strut
suspension which was becoming more mainstream at
this time. The rear suspension was less
conventional which was independent with coil
springs and semi trailing wishbones that pivoted
from a stout cross beam that also supported the
differential housing. The original 1499cc engine
with overhead camshafts marked out the BMW 1500's
new four cylinder engine as a modern design, the
new engine had plenty of scope for future
enlargement and development. Another feature for
the engine in the BMW 1500 was its position, it was
positioned 30 degrees to the right of vertical,
this was necessary to allow for a low bonnet
line that contributed to the stylish look of the
car.
First reports praised the BMW 1500 for its all round
style and commanding driving position, however
it was reported that it was necessary to lean
forward a little to engage first and third
gears, this was due to the long travel distance
of the gear lever. The car was also commended
for its large 40cm tall luggage compartment.
In 1963 with the increased sales from the
popular BMW 1500, BMW was able to pay its first
dividend in 20 years.
The car was able to achieve 80hp, and accelerate
to 62mph in about 15 seconds. In view of the
engine and the size, the performance at the time
was considered lively. The engine ran without
unwanted vibrations, even at speeds above
6,000rpm, even thought the engine needed to be
worked hard to achieve rapid progress.
With the firm suspension came a harsh ride, this
came as a surprised to people conditioned to the
501's comfortable ride.
The 1961, BMW 1500 was the first car to feature the
Hofmeister kink, a low forward bend in the C
pillar of the car, that was a piece of metal
that separates the rear side windows from the
rear glass. The kink was named after the then
BMW director of design, Wilhelm Hofmeister.
