AC Frua Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
1965: The AC Frua was produced, a British
built GT car, with a British chassis, Italian
body and an American large block V8 making it
truly exotic for the era.
The AC Frua used the chassis from the Cobra 427
Mark III with an extension of 6 inches. The
chassis, built in England, were shipped to Frua's
workshop in Italy where they received their
body and then returned back to England for the installation of the engine and trim.
The cost for building these cars was huge and
they could not be sold competitively. The AC Frua
never was fully developed as AC Cars
lacked the financial means. The AC Frua's main draw
back was the heat produced by the huge V8's bleeding
into into
the cabin. This was a common problem with many
of the muscle
cars in this period.
The AC Frua's chassis construction was very
similar to most Italian super cars. Although the
4inch tubular chassis used allowed both
the coupe and convertible versions to be built
using the same chassis due to the immensely
rigid frame, the intricate frame
design was unfortunately prone to rust.
The AC Frua was in direct compertition with the
Ferrari,
Lamborghini and
Maserati models
in production at this time.
