AC Cobra 260/289 Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
1961: Bristol had decided to cease production of their own engine and use a Chrysler 331 cid V8 instead. AC began using a 2.6 litre Ford Zephyr engine in their cars. September, Shelby airmailed AC a letter that asked if they would build him a car to hold a V8 engine. AC agreed as long as a suitable engine was found. Carroll Shelby first went to Chevrolet to see if they would provide an engine, but Chevrolet not wanting to add competition to the corvette, said no. Ford wanted to compete with the Corvette and happened to have a brand new small block, thin walled engine that could be used in the endeavour.
1962: January: A 221ci Ford V8 was fitted in to AC's prototype chassis CSX0001 in Thames Ditton, Surrey.
1962: February: Following testing and modifications, the engine and transmission were removed, the chassis was then air freighted to Shelby in Los Angeles were his team fitted an engine and transmission in less than 8 hours and began road testing. Production was easy as AC had made most of the modifications needed for the small block V8 including extensive reworking of the AC Ace's front end. One of the more important modifications was the fitting of a much stronger rear differential to handle the increased engine power. Instead of an old ENV unit, a Salisbury 4HU unit with inboard disk brakes was chosen. However, on the production version, the inboard brakes were moved outboard to reduce cost.
Cobra Mark I's were fitted with 4.2litre engines of which 75 were made, then 51 Mark I's models were produced with a larger version of the Windsor Ford engine V8, a 4.7 litre version.
1962: Late in the year: AC's chief engineer, Alan Turner finished a major design change of the car's front end, he was now able to fit rack and pinion steering while using transverse leaf spring suspension.
1963: The Mark II entered production. A steering rack was borrowed from an MGB with a steering column from a VW beetle. Around 528 Mark II Cobras were built.
1964: October: Two prototype Mark III were sent to the United States, after, unpainted rolling chassis were sent  for Shelby's workshop to finish.
An AC Cobra Coupe was estimated to have done 185mph on the M1 motorway in England, driven by Jack Sears and Peter Bolton, this was done during a shakedown test prior to that year's Le Mans 24hour race. This resulted in government officials citing the increasing accident death rate in the early 1960's as principal motivation along with the AC highlighting the risk and implemented national speed limits.
1965: January: Production of the AC Cobra Mark III began. This new car had been designed in cooperation with Ford in Detroit. They built a new chassis using 4 inch tubes for the main chassis rather than 3 inch and had coil spring suspension all round. The car also had a larger radiator opening and wide fenders. The Mark III was also powered by a side oilier Ford 427 engine that had been rated as 425bhp, providing a top speed of 163mph in the standard model, with a 485bhp engine in the competition model a top speed of 180mph was achieved.
1965: AC Cobra Mark II production ceased in the summer. During 1965 300 Mark III Cobras were sent to Shelby in the USA, even though it was an impressive automobile, the car was a financial failure and did not sell well. The cars ended up with Ford's 428, 7litre engine with a long stroke, smaller bore and a lower build cost.
1967: Ford and Carroll Shelby discontinued importing AC cars from England, although still successful in racing AC Cobra's were a financial failure. AC Cars continued producing coil spring AC Roadster's with the small block Ford 289 with  narrow fenders, this was built and sold in Europe until late 1969.
