AC Ace Car Facts, Description, Design & General Information
1951: The AC Ace was introduced post war
and helped build the companies reputation for sports
cars. The Ace was designed by John Tojeiro, it
used a light ladder type tubular frame with all
independent transverse leaf spring suspension
and an open two seat alloy body made by
English wheeling machines. The AC Ace featured AC's
aging 2 litre overhead cam, straight 6 engine
giving a top speed of 102mph with a 0-60mph in
13 seconds. Not very sporting for a sports car!!
1954: The Aceca hard top coupe was introduced,
incorporating an
early form of hatchback rear door.
1956: Optional Ace with a Bristol Car's superb 2
litre engine producing 120bhp, this was a straight 6 engine
with 3 downdraught carburettors and a slick 4
speed gearbox. The new top speed leapt to 116mph
at a 0-60 in 9 seconds, the response of the car
was much sweeter and felt more modern. Overdrive
was also available.
1957: Front discs were an option and later
standardized.
1962: The AC Ace's engine replaced with a 2.6 litre Ken Rudd Ruddspeed engine,
the new engine featured 3 Weber or
SU carburettors and either a mays or iron cast
head. The new engine boosted the cars performance further,
however, only around 40 were made as Carroll
Shelby re-directed AC's attention to the
AC Cobra.
During the final years of the AC Ace's production,
some models were fitted with the MKII Ford Zephyr
2.6 litre straight six engine, the Ford
engined AC Ace's used a smaller grille which was
incorporated into the Cobra.
